"The House discussed and passed The Pakistan Land Port Authority Bill, 2025. The Bill was moved by Minister of State for Interior & Narcotics Control Mr. Talal Chaudhry on behalf of Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control" National Assembly announced on X.
The idea of having a land authority was originated in 2012, by the PPP government under the Commerce Ministry, but never progressed beyond preliminary approval. In December 2024, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar again moved the bill on behalf of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. After becoming law, Pakistan will be the third South Asian, after Bangladesh and India to have a land port authority. Bangladesh established its authority in 2002, while India followed in March 2012.
After the approval of the Senate and President Asif Ali Zardari, the bill will become law and establish the Pakistan Land Port Authority, which would function as a statutory body. It would be responsible for inter-agency coordination to facilitate the movement of goods and people across border crossing points.
Pakistan shares land borders with India, Afghanistan, Iran, and China. Major crossing points with Afghanistan includes Torkham, Chaman, Ghulam Khan, Kharlachi, and Angoor Adda, while Wagah and Kartarpur connects Pakistan with India), Taftan, Gabd, and Mand with Iran, and Khunjerab Pass connects the country to China.
The new authority is expected to ease delays at land borders, Faster clearances and standard rules at land borders will help traders, transporters, and travellers move more easily across the region, strengthening Pakistan’s role in South Asian connectivity.
