Third attack in a month on Afghan-Tajik border raises alarm

DUSHANBE, 25.12.2025: Tajikistans official news service NIAT Khovar has reported on Thursday that they lost two of their soldiers in a clash with three assailants coming from Afghanistan.

According to the statement , the incident took place on December 23, 2025, at 23:30, when ‘three members of a terrorist organization crossed the state border and entered the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan from Afghanistan within the protected area of Border Outpost No. 5 “Bog” of the 0341 “Sarchashma” Border Detachment, located in the Qavoq area of Shamsiddin Shohin District.’

As a result of timely operational and search measures, at 11:15 on December 24, 2025, the location of the terrorists on the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan was identified.

The terrorists refused to comply with the order of Tajik border guards to surrender and offered armed resistance. They intended to carry out an armed attack on one of the border outposts of the Border Troops of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan.

As a result of the combat operation, all three terrorists were neutralized. From the scene, three firearms—an M-16 rifle and a Kalashnikov assault rifle—three foreign-made pistols equipped with suppressors, ten hand grenades, one night-vision device, explosives, and other military equipment were seized.

During the armed clash and the prevention of this terrorist act, two servicemen of the Border Troops of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan—Navruzbekov Zirehbon Naghzibekovich and Qurbonov Ismatullo Ghulomovich—were killed.

Over the past month, this is the third incident involving an armed attack, a terrorist act, and the illegal crossing of the state border from Afghanistan into Tajikistan, resulting in the deaths of civilians and military personnel.

The statement said these facts demonstrate the Taliban government’s failure to fulfill their international obligations and repeated commitments to ensuring security and stability along the state border with the Republic of Tajikistan and to combating members of terrorist organizations, reflecting serious and recurring irresponsibility.

No reaction from the Afghan Taliban has been received about the incident.

The Border Troops of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan hope that the leadership of the Taliban government will offer an apology to the people of Tajikistan and take additional effective measures to ensure security along the border with Tajikistan.

The Border Troops of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan firmly state that they possess full physical and combat capabilities to ensure the security of the state border. Tajik border guards will continue to resolutely defend the country’s borders against external encroachments and, as always, will deliver a decisive response to terrorist groups, smugglers, and any attempts at border violations from Afghanistan.

At present, the situation along the state border is calm.

The Tajik officials say investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The latest incident shows that a new escalation is under way on the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan following a series of attacks in which Dushanbe claims Afghan fighters.

Earlier, assailants from Afghanistan targeted a joint Chinese–Tajik gold mine, killing five Chinese nationals. Beijing subsequently advised all its nationals to leave the border area, demanded Tajikistan strengthen its defenses, and called on Afghanistan to investigate the incidents.

In the wake of the attacks, Reuters news agency quoted sources in Tajikistan who said the country was asking Moscow to deploy troops—either under the remit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) or from Russia’s 201st military base in Tajikistan—to carry out joint border patrols. Even though Reuters subsequently deleted its article because of “insufficient evidence,” the situation remains a problematic one for Moscow.

At stake is Russia’s role as a regional security guarantor.

Despite having a weak army and a long border with Afghanistan, Tajikistan rushed to position itself as the main adversary of the Taliban regime that came to power in 2021. While Uzbekistan forged a working relationship with Kabul, and Russia became the first (and so far only) country in the world to establish diplomatic relations with the Taliban, Dushanbe demonstratively refused to engage.

Tajikistan even backed the remnants of Afghan opposition forces, and remains the only country in the region not to allow the Taliban to use the Afghan embassy. Confrontational rhetoric has been accompanied by muscle flexing, with military parades on the border, and checks of the readiness of the country’s reservists.
